Men's and Women's Cross Country each finish ninth at Purple Valley Classic

, MAThe men's and women's cross country teams each finished ninth at the Purple Valley Classic at Williams on Saturday.
 
The men only competed in the 8K Run while the women only competed in the 6K Run.
 
With 16 teams competing in this tournament, including several from Division I, it is the first time that both programs placed in the top-10 since the expansion.

On the men's side, the Dutchmen compiled an average time of 29:18. Freshman Gabe Sturges finished 44th overall with a 27:32.41. Sturges' time is Union's best result in the past six years the program competed at the Purple Valley Classic. Sophomore Ian Schwartz marked a 29:16.59 to finish 86th.
 
The Dutchwomen as a team compiled an average time of 26.14.60. Senior Sarah Tardiff finished 69th with a time of 25:03.47. In her first appearance in the 6K, senior Rebecca Skudder marked a 25:59.55. Sophomore Erin Horgan recorded a time of 26:04.56, which is 45 seconds better than her performance last season at the meet.
 
Both teams will return to action on Oct. 3 for the Mount Saint Mary's Invitational in Newburgh, NY.
