SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – After winning the 500 yard freestyle last weekend at the UNYSCSA Championship,
Steve Schapp qualified to compete at the NCAA Championships on March 17-19 on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
Making his third NCAA Championship appearance in four years, Schapp will compete in the 100 yard Butterfly and the 1,650 yard Freestyle on Wednesday, March 17 and on Saturday, March 20.
Schapp has had a tremendous season this year. He's earned four Liberty League Swimmer of the Week awards this season including this week.
On the first day of the UNYSCSA Championship, Schapp won the 500 yard Freestyle with a time of 4:34.58, besting Stevens' Alex Benham's 4:34.59 and thus earning his spot in the NCAA Championship.
On the final day of the NCAA Championship last season, Schapp turned in 15:54.87 to finish 15th in the 1,650 freestyle. Schapp also finished 29th in the 500 yard Freestyle with a time of 4:35.77 on the first day.
During his freshman campaign, Schapp was one of 19 freshmen to compete with 240 competitors at the NCAA Championship. He was selected All-American on the final day of the event. He competed in the 1,650 Freestyle on the final day and finished 15th with a time of 15:24.81. He was three seconds under the association record.
Schapp also competed in the 500 yard Freestyle. He finished 26th in the preliminary with a time of 4:38.73. He also competed in the 100 yard Butterfly preliminary, where he marked 52.22 to finish 29th.
