SCHENECTADY, NY -- Capping off an outstanding career, Union College senior guard Joey Lokitis was named the William M. Scanlon Most Valuable Player for the Union men's basketball team. The announcement came at the team's post-season banquet at the historic Hale House on the Union campus tonight.
Lokitis averaged 15.7 points per game and 5.6 rebounds per contest. He had 68 assists, 41 steals, and shot 81.6% from the free throw line. Lokitis was unanimous Liberty League First Team selections, and was a five time Liberty League Guard of the Week, the most weekly honors of any guard this past season. He led Union in scoring, three point field goals and free throw shooting. In Liberty League rankings, Lokitis was first in three point field goals made, third in scoring, sixth in steals, ninth in assists, ninth in three point field goal percentage and 10th in rebounding. He scored in double figures in 21 of 25 games, and had 20 or more points in nine games. He averaged 21.0 points in his last five regular season games, and had two double doubles during the season. Lokitis posted 10 rebounds each against Medgar Evers and Clarkson. He scored 24 at Hamilton and 23 vs. Elms. He also had six assists at RPI. On Feb. 19 he became the 17th Union men's basketball player to record 1,000 career points. Lokitis was named to the Liberty League Honorable Mention team last season.
The William M. Scanlon MVP award is named in honor of Union's all-time winningest men's basketball coach, who retired as an Associate Athletic Director in 2008.
Head Coach Bob Montana also presented other awards to the Dutchmen during the evening. The William Grant Academic Achievement Award was presented to freshman forward Keven Donohue. He carries a GPA of 3.66. Donohue also received the Most Improved Player Award. He scored at a 10.2 clip during the season, with 16 blocks, while shooting 46% from the floor and 72% from the line.
The Paul Rieschick Award is awarded to the individual who best exemplifies the team concept through dedication, loyalty, and work ethic. This season's recipient was junior guard Matt Rogers. Rogers played in 18 games off the bench for Union this past season.
Under Coach Montana, Union returned to the Liberty League playoffs and finished with a 12-13 overall record in 2009-10.
