Union College Athletics Heritage
Because the College had a playground from about 1804, and campus areas suited to sports from 1814, athletic activities have nearly always been at least an incidental part of its history. From about 1878 until nearly a century later, physical education was seen as a formal part of college education. Intercollegiate athletics began in 1860 and by 1881 had become significant enough to prompt the first serious effort by the faculty to regulate them. Since 1931, the College has had direct control of all except club and some casual recreational sports.
From "Encyclopedia of Union College History" by Wayne Somers., 2003
The very first team sporting event for Union College Athletics was on May 29, 1860. The baseball team played Hiawathas in Schenectady on that date.
Since that very first team event, Union College student athletes have produced remarkable achievements in the playing arena, in the classroom, in the community, and after their playing and collegiate careers have completed.
