SCHENECTADY, NY -- Four members of the Union College football team received Liberty League Football weekly honors after the final game of the 2009 season. Andrew Connolly was named the league's Offensive Performer of the Week,
JP Sticco was the Defensive Performer,
Blaise Ancona received the Co-Special Teams Performer and
Kevin Valenti was the Co-Rookie of the Week.
Connolly was named the ECAC North Atlantic Bowl Most Outstanding Player in leading Union to a 39-21 victory at home over Hartwick. He passed for a career high 336 yards with two touchdowns, and caught a 37 yard score. Connolly had his second career 300 yard passing game, and was 18 for 28 without an interception. This was Connolly's second weekly honor this year.
Sticco had two interceptions in Union's 39-21 win over Hartwick in the ECAC North Atlantic Bowl. His first interception came at the Hobart 47 in the second quarter with a six point lead, and his other came at the Union 12 early in the third quarter.
Ancona averaged 40.3 yards on six punts in Union's 39-21 win over Hartwick in the ECAC North Atlantic Bowl. He booted a total of 242 yards and had two touchbacks. His best of the day was a 46 yard punt. He shared the honor with J.J. Moran of Susquehanna.
Valenti, starting in place of the injured
Chris Coney, rushed for a career high 120 yards with two touchdowns in Union's 39-21 win over Hartwick in the ECAC North Atlantic Bowl. He had scores of 54 and 2 yards and had 25 carries with an average of 4.8 yards per carry. Valenti shared the award with Jalon Scott of Susquehanna.
This season, the Dutchmen had six Offensive Performer weekly awards (the most in the Liberty League), six Defensive honors (tied for the most), two Special Team selections and a Rookie of the Week.
Union finished the 2009 season with an 8-3 record and was Co-Champion of the Liberty League with Susquehanna. It was Union's 28th consecutive non-losing season, and the ninth eight victory season in Head Coach
John Audino's 18 seasons at Union.
