SCHENECTADY, NY – Sarah Stefanon (Perry, NY) struck out nine and allowed two hits to help St. John Fisher defeat Medaille 8-0 in six innings on Saturday in the second game of the ECAC Championships at Union College's Alexander Field.
Medaille takes on Elmira at 3 p.m. while St. John Fisher will take on Union at 5 p.m. The win improves the Cardinals to 26-18 and the Lady Mavericks fall to 23-21. Stefanon earned the win to improve her season record to 9-7 while Amanda Westling (Dunkirk, NY) was credited the loss and falls to 11-12.
The Cardinals hit four home runs in the game, three in the sixth inning. Kayla Goodberlet (Columbus, Ohio), who went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Cardinals, led off the sixth inning with a shot to left field. The next batter, Carissa Carlson (Little Genesee, NY), made it 7-0 with a homerun to left field and Meghan Graves (Fort Ann, NY) ended the game with her home run on the year. Emily Britzzalaro (Clarence, NY) hit a two-run shot to left field in the fifth inning.
Brieanna Brink and Laura Mauger both got the hit for Lady Mavericks. Mauger singled to centerfield in the second inning and Brink singled to right in the sixth inning.
St. John Fisher broke the ice in the second inning when Lauren O'Brien, who reached on a fielding error, scored off a double by Megan Zoerb.
The Cardinals had a chance to do damage in the first inning with the bases loaded but Westling made two Cardinal hitters hit fly foul balls in each corner to end the inning.
