SCHENECTADY, NY – St. John Fisher junior Jamie Harmon’s (South Portland, ME) RBI single through the middle in the bottom of the seventh lifted the Cardinals to a 3-2 victory in the semifinal game of the 2010 ECAC Division III Upstate Championship. Second-seeded St. John Fisher will play top-seeded Union in the title game at noon. Fisher needs to victories to earn the trophy, while Union only needs one.
The Cardinals improve to 27-19 on the season, while Purple Eagles end their season at 16-10.
After four scoreless innings, Elmira jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth. DePaul’s two-out double to left center scored freshman Carlye Bianco (Eatontown, NY) to open the scoring. Junior Brittnee McGuire (Herkimer, NY) followed an at-bat later with a single to right to score DePaul.
Not to be outdone, St. John Fisher put up two runs in the bottom half of the inning to even things. Sophomore Jenn Vanek (Smithtown, NY), who led off with a single, scored along with sophomore Megan Zoerb (Painted Post, NY) with a two-out, two-RBI single to center by Harmon.
After shutting down the Purple Eagles in the sixth and seventh innings, the Cardinals put runners in scoring position when sophomore Carissa Carlson (Little Genesee, NY) doubled with one out. Two at-bats later, Harmon’s single up the middle couldn’t be contained by the Eagles’ defense, allowing Carlson to cross home.
Freshman Sarah Stefanon (Perry, NY) earned the victory, throwing all seven innings and striking out four. Elmira’s junior Casandra Fontinell (Shoreham, NY) suffered the loss, striking out one in six-and-a-third innings.
