Senior forward Stephane Boileau was named as one of 25 nominees for the 2011 BNY Mellon Wealth Management Hockey Humanitarian Award, the HHA committee announced today.
The BNY Mellon Wealth Management Hockey Humanitarian Award is awarded annually to college hockey's finest citizen and seeks to recognize college hockey players, Division I or Division III, male or female, who give back to their community in the true humanitarian spirit.
Boileau is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, a National Leadership Honors Society which recognizes exceptional college students for community service, among other attributes. Boileau and his teammates served Thanksgiving dinner at the Schenectady chapter YMCA and participated in the Albany Center for Disability Services telethon which helped raise $1.9 million.
Every year, Boileau speaks at a Schenectady-area high school about the importance of hockey in French-Canadian culture. He is a member of the Union chapter of Active Minds, which promotes awareness and education about mental health to fellow students on campus. He is also the team's representative on the Union College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Boileau, who carries a 3.89 GPA in Neuroscience, was a finalist of the ECAC Hockey Student-Athlete of the Year award and made his second-straight appearance on the ECAC Hockey All-Academic team. He won the Thomas Vanarden Dukehard award for the highest GPA on the men's ice hockey team for the second consecutive season, and was named Union College's junior student-athlete of the year. He was also named to the 2010 ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large Second Team.
The HHA committee will review each candidate's credentials, then narrow the submissions to a group of finalists by February 2011. One or more members of the Foundation will personally interview those finalists.
The recipient of the BNY Mellon Wealth Management Hockey Humanitarian Award will be presented on April 8, 2011 during the Friday night ceremonies at the Frozen Four, to be held in St. Paul, Minnesota.
