TROY, NY – Courtney Turner and
Christine Valente combine for three power-play goals giving the Dutchwomen their first-ever win at Houston Field House over RPI 3-2 Saturday afternoon.
The Dutchwomen pounced on their first opportunity as Union was on the power play from an interference call by Delaney Middlebrook. Turner took only nine seconds on the power play to score her first collegiate goal. The goal came as Ali Svoboda was dispossessed near the net as
Christine Valente was able to set up Turner in front of the net for the score. Rensselaer came back with a flurry of shots from the attacking line. However,
Shenae Lundberg was there to make 11 saves in the first period. RPI looked to have an opportunity with Kathryn Schilter and Taylor Horton at the crease but the netminder was there to thwart the Engineer attack. Union's power play produced again as
Stefanie Thomson and
Jessica Kaminsky was able to set up Turner again for her second of the game from the left side to put the Dutchwomen up two. RPI's attack was slowed down by the shot-blocking of the Dutchwomen defense and Union was able to end the period 2-0.
At the start of the second period, the Dutchwomen were able to go on the man-advantage again. However, RPI nearly cut the lead in half as Jordan Smelker took advantage of a center ice turnover. Lundberg was there to eliminate any chance of a short-handed goal to preserve the two goal lead. Moments later,
Jessica Kaminsky was able to beat Engineers netminder Kelly O'Brien with a skate deflection. However, the goal was reviewed and waived off for the forward kicking the puck in. Rensselaer's attack began to gain momentum in the latter part of the second period as RPI pressured the Dutchwomen defense. The defense nearly outlasted the clock as the second period was down to the final minute but the Engineers attack broke through. Eleeza Cox was able to get one by Lundberg off her skate to cut the Union lead down to one.
Rensselaer's pressure carried over in the third period as the Engineers offensive line continued to test the Dutchwomen defense. Lundberg and the Dutchwomen defense bended but did not break as Union endured a shot disadvantage and a power play from RPI. Jenn Godin's high sticking gave some relief for the Dutchwomen defense as the offense was able to go on the power play for the fourth time. The power play came through as the Dutchwomen scored their third goal from
Christine Valente on a quick rebound from O'Brien. Valente's goal was set up by Tuner and
Camille Corbin to give Union the lead again with under five remaining in the match.
RPI's attack immediately tested the Dutchwomen defense as RPI outshot Union 13-5 in the third period and 32-17 in the match. Lundberg however kept the puck out of the net making several stops to give the Dutchwomen their first ever win at Houston Field House 3-2.
Union's win is the first Division I victory against the Engineers and their first win against RPI since October 30, 2004. In addition, the Dutchwomen scored three-power play goals for the first time in their Division I program history.
Kelly O'Brien made 14 saves in the loss and falls to 1-3-0. Lundberg earns her first win on the season in her 2012-13 season debut.
The Dutchwomen will continue their road-trip as Union will play Clarkson and St. Lawrence next weekend. Union will face the Golden Knights on Friday, October 26 beginning at 3 p.m. and the Saints on Saturday, October 27 starting at 2 p.m.
