Game 1: Union 9, Oneonta 1
In the first game of the day, host Union jumped out to a six-run lead after two innings and led, 7-1, headed into the bottom of the sixth. After pinch hitter Callee Heywood (Innisfail, Alb.) doubled, advanced on a Michelle Rogers (Clarence, N.Y.) single and scored on a Megan Kaknis (New Windsor, N.Y.) single, designated player Alex King (Chester Springs, Pa.) plated another run to give the Dutchwomen an eight-run margin and the six-inning victory. Union was led at the plate by Rogers, who went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored. A pair of singles to right field advanced Shannon Egan (Hauppauge, N.Y.) to set up the run for Oneonta in the fourth, but the senior came around to cross home when the ball was misplayed in the outfield. Union sophomore Ginni Sack (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) threw a two-hitter to earn the win, while Rebecca Burkart (Averill Park, N.Y.) took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in one inning pitched.
Freshman Jen Bach (Lansdale, Pa.) hit a two-run double in the bottom of the first and junior Sara Finkbeiner (Napanoch, N.Y.) plated another with a single in the next inning to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Red Hawks to a 3-1 win over Alfred in game two. Sophomore Jessica Figallo (Ridgewood, N.J.) accounted for the lone Saxons’ hit with a homer to left center in the top of the fifth. Felicia Bua (Gilford, N.H.) allowed the lone run on four hits while striking out four to earn the complete-game win, while her counterpart, Alfred’s Holly Seidewand (Webster, N.Y.) took the loss, giving up three runs on six hits.
Game 3: Alfred 4, Oneonta 0
Seidewand came back to pitch a complete-game shutout and earn her 15th win on the season in game three, a 4-0 five-hitter over Oneonta to keep the Saxons alive in the tournament. The sophomore helped her winning cause with a leadoff home run, finishing the day with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate. The Saxons picked up three runs off five hits in the third inning, capped by an RBI double to center by freshman Ashley Passaro (Long Beach, N.Y.), who finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate. Oneonta was led offensively by Egan, who also collected two hits in three at-bats in the game. Freshman Jillian Sullivan (Glens Falls, N.Y.) took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in 2.2 innings.
The Dutchwomen collected 10 runs on seven hits off of three different Red Hawks pitchers in the first inning and cruised to a five-inning 10-2 win in game four. Union batted around in the first frame, highlighted by a two-run double from Kaitlin Graham (Orchard Park, N.Y.), and capped by a sacrifice fly to left by Kaknis. After allowing the final Dutchwomen run of the first, Red Hawks’ hurler Bua, who earned the win in game 2, settled down, holding Union scoreless on two hits over the final three innings. RPI picked up runs in the second and third, first on Beth Gargon’s (East Hampton, Conn.) homer over the centerfield fence, then when junior Julianne Bass (Costa Mesa, Calif.) drew a bases loaded walk in the third frame. Michelle Bianchetti (Highland Mills, N.Y.) took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on two hits in the first. Sack gave up two runs on eight hits to earn her second win of the day and 22nd of the season.
Game 5: Alfred 10, RPI 0 (5 inn)
Alfred scored four runs in each of the first two innings to take a commanding lead over RPI and added single scores in each of the next two. Sophomore hurlers Holly Seidewand (Webster, N.Y.) and Jesika LeBarron (Campbell, N.Y.) combined for a two-hit shutout of the Red Hawks, with starter Seidewand adding to her winning effort with a 2-for-3 day at the plate with a pair of runs scored, while LeBarron finished 2-for-2 with 3 RBI and two runs scored. Ashley Passaro (Long Beach, N.Y.) was 3-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs. Red Hawks’ starter Felicia Bua (Gilford, N.H.) took the loss for RPI, allowing eight runs (four earned) on nine hits. Reliever Michelle Bianchetti (Highland Mills, N.Y.) allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits in the remaining 3.2 innings.
