RPI 3, New Paltz 2

SCHENECTADY, NY – Senior midfielder Judy Kastner (West Islip, NY) unloaded with three goals, including two in the second half to lead RPI to a 3-2 victory against New Paltz at the Union College Soccer Invitational on Sunday. The Engineers improve to 2-0-0, while the Hawks go to 0-2-0.
 
Kastner broke the scoreless tie at 20:50 from a cross from sophomore midfielder Briana Gallup (Amsterdam, NY).
 
Her second and third markers both came on breakaways. Her second goal came at 52:21 and her third was at 67:32.
 
New Paltz sophomore forward Kelly Gorton (New Paltz, NY) got her team on the board when she won the ball in a scrum in front of the net at 71:44 and sophomore forward Rebecca Devlin (Staten Island, NY) pulled her team within one at 85:00.
 
RPI controlled play for the majority of the game and pressured New Paltz early. Freshman forward Alexandra Fontanetta (Neshanic Station, NY) tallied four shots, including three on goal in the first half alone.
 
New Paltz goalkeeper Sarah Boccard (Washingtonville, NY) finished the day with four saves, while her counterpart, sophomore Meghan White, turned aside three saves. White kept her team in the lead with a spectacular jumping save during the 35th minute, denying a rocket from New Paltz freshman Danielle Sawicki (Garden City, NY).
 
New Paltz flashed early in the second half with more possession time, but RPI gained the momentum back with Kastner’s second tally.
 
RPI owned the advantage at shots (13-7), shots on goal (7-5) and corners (7-1).
