SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute cruised to a 5-1 victory against Rutgers-Newark on Saturday at the Union College Invitational. The game-winner was credited to senior forward Sarah Hinz (Swanzey, NH), who broke the 1-1 tie at 46:22 on a pass from freshman midfielder Alexandra Fontanetta (Neshanic Station, NJ).
Fontanetta produced the games first marker at 27:21 on a free kick from atop of the box. Here attempt sailed above and around the wall and into the right side of the goal.
Rutgers-New answered less than 10 minutes later with a goal by freshman forward Julia Caseres (Union, NJ) at 35:53 and ensured the 1-1 score entering the half.
Hinz struck early for the Engineers and senior forward Judy Kastner (West Islip, NY) kept the momentum going at 49:26 when she won the ball 10 yards out and fired into the lower-right corner.
Junior midfielder Briana Bet (Whitehall, PA) and junior forward Amanda Brophy (Scituate, MA) added insurance goals at 69:45 and 89:31, respectively.
RPI goalkeeper Meghan White (Kingston, NY) and Rutgers-Newark netminder Kate Renteria (North Bergen, NJ) each turned aside five shots.
Both teams complete competition at the tournament on Sunday. RPI faces New Paltz at 11 a.m., while Rutgers-Newark takes on host-school Union at 2 p.m.
