James came to Schenectady after two seasons on the staff at Division III Rhodes College, spending one season as the Offensive Coordinator before taking over as interim head coach for the abbreviated Spring 2021 campaign. Offensively, Rhodes produced four SAA top ten single game performers. During his time with the Lynx, James also helped to establish new recruiting processes as Co-Recruiting Coordinator which included a record setting class in 2021, updated the program's video systems, assisted in strength & conditioning as Athletic Performance Co-Coordinator, directed the team's leadership development curriculum, and took a lead role in branding in marketing as the team's Creative Director.

His offenses were consistently ranked among the best in the conference and nation, including a top-10 scoring offense and passing offense in Division III during the 2015 season and the country's six-best red-zone offense in 2016. During his time at Illinois College, he helped 15 players earn All-Midwest Conference recognition, two earned All-Region honors and one pick up All-America laurels.

James started his collegiate coaching career at Missouri Baptist University in 2014, coaching the offensive line and tight ends while also serving as Recruiting Coordinator for the nascent NAIA program. While at Missouri Baptist, he helped produce the #25 Red Zone scoring offense in the NAIA and #20 ranked unit in sacks allowed.
