CLINTON, N.Y. - Joe Smith became the 26th Hamilton College men's basketball player to score 1,000 points in a career and the Continentals went on to defeat Union, 74-57, in an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association contest at Scott Field House.
Down by 11 at the half, the Dutchmen opened the second 20 minutes of play with an 11-5 run that brought them back to within five, 52-47, with 10:33 minutes left to play. The Continentals ended the Dutchmen's bid by scoring 21 of the game's next 23 points.
The loss dropped Union to 12-3 overall, 2-2 in the UCAA.
Smith scored 15 points and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for Hamilton, which is now 10-3 overall and 2-1 in the UCAA. Tsakane Ngobeni scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Mike Evans came off the bench to add 11 markers, C.J. Cantil had 10 and five assists, and Tim Welchons scored nine points and handed out six assists.
Devon Bruce led Union with 12 points. Imbrie Packard added nine points and a team-high seven rebounds. Chris Murphy also had nine points. Leading scorers John Cagianello and Brian Scordato (who came into the contest averaging 18.1 and 15.1 points, respectively), were both held to a season-lows of four points and five points, respectively.
