Union upended cross-town rival RPI in Liberty League play with a 1-0 double overtime win to secure the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Tournament. Freshman Chris Poey scored three minutes into the second, extra session as he converted on a cross to the far post from Luke Labella.
The victory, which was the fourth-straight for the Dutchmen, improved their league record to 4-2 and their overall mark to 9-6. This marks the first year that Union has qualified for the four-team playoff, which will be held at regular-season champion St. Lawrence. Union, which is currently in third place, one point behind second-place Hamilton, move in front of the Continentals if it can defeat Skidmore in the regular-season finale on October 30. The Dutchmen will host the game, which is scheduled to begin at 2:30 (Union will play its final non-league game of the season at home on Oct. 27 against Utica College, starting at 3 p.m.).
Poey's goal, which was his third game-winner of the season, was also his team-leading seventh tally. Matt Mayerhofer had three saves for the Dutchmen.
