Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Union Blanks Clarkson 8-0

Box Score

Schenectady, NY (Oct. 9, 2004) The Union women's soccer team continued its dominance over the opposition with an 8-0 win over Clarkson at home this afternoon.  The Dutchwomen have outscored their opponents 12-1 over the last two matches to bring their overall record to 9-1-1 and a 3-1 mark in the Liberty League.  Junior Cassandra Mariani (Boonton, NJ) got things started with the game-winning goal and senior Brittany Cressman (Duxbury, MA) had another two-goal performance.

Mariani scored in the 15th minute, heading the ball home off a corner kick.  Union converted on three of its seven corners on the day.  Jenna Ondash (New Canaan, CT) followed suit 14 minutes later with a header off another corner kick.

Cressman scored back-to-back goals to make it a 4-0 game in the second half.  She notched her first goal less than three minutes in with a heel flick to the near post off a Brianna Bailey (Easthampton, MA) corner kick.  She bested that with a one-timer off a short cross from Mariani.

Karen Bertasso (Scotia, NY) wrapped up the scoring for the Garnet in the 82nd minute as she snuck the ball past Clarkson goalkeeper Meagan Emlaw after receiving a pass from Stephanie Cronan (Marblehead, MA), who scored four minutes earlier.

Emlaw had a rough outing between the posts for the Golden Knights as she faced 14 shots on goal and made six saves.

Union goalkeeper Julie Gawronski (Dunkirk, NY) made one save on the day to earn the shutout as the Dutchwomen defense allowed just two shots.

Union will face Oswego on the road in its next match on Tuesday, October 12 at 4:00 p.m.
