Box ScorePOTSDAM, N.Y.-- Sophomore forward Brian Scordato"s three-point field
goal with 57 seconds left to play gave Union a 67-65 lead over Clarkson and sophomore
guards Chris Murphy and John Cagianello combined to score all three of the Dutchmen"s
final three points from the foul line as the Garnet remained in the hunt for
the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association"s postseason tournament with
a thrilling 71-68 come-from-behind victory over the Golden Knights.
The Dutchmen not only survived a 22-5 Clarkson run that enabled the Knights
to turn a 17-point deficit with 12:49 remaining into a 65-63 lead with 2:47
left, the win kept the Dutchmen"s hopes alive of finishing among the
top four team in the UCAA"s regular-season standings. Union is now 7-5
in the conference and 17-6 overall. The loss, meanwhile, was Clarkson"s
second of the weekend leaving it with an 8-4 UCAA mark and an overall log of
14-9.
Only the top for teams qualify for the UCAA"s postseason tournament,
which will be held on February 27 and 28 at the site of the regular-season
champion.
A 15-4 run gave the Dutchmen a 58-41 lead with 13:17 remaining. Following
a Clarkson time out, the Golden Knights came back to outscore the Dutchmen
22-5 to take a two-point lead. Josh Harner, who was held scoreless during the
run, hit back-to-back three-point bombs to closeout the run.
Murphy brought Union back to within 65-64 as he canned one of two free throws
with 2:35 remaining before Devon Bruce rebounded a missed Clarkson jumper which
Scordato converted into a three-point basket that gave the Dutchmen their 67-65
advantage off a long outlet pass from Murphy. Senior captain Imbrie Packard
came up with a block on E.J. Harrison"s jump shot attempt with 36 seconds
remaining with Murphy being fouled as he came up with the rebound. The Dutchmen"s
point guard hit both charity shots with 31 ticks remaining to give Union a
69-65 lead. Harner then connected on another three-point basket, this one with
19 seconds left, to pull Clarkson back to within 69-68. Cagianello, who was
fouled with nine seconds showing, hit both free throws and the Knights missed
a long three-point attempt at the buzzer.
Cagianello finished with 31 points for Union whiloe Bruce had 19 and Scordato
11. Murphy contributed four assists to go along with his seven points while
Bruce had a game-high 14 rebounds, 13 of which came on the defensive end.
The first half ended with a bit of confusion as Clarkson"s bench was
charge with a technical foul after Cagianello scored off a feed from Chris
Murphy to give the Dutchmen a 38-28 lead with 19 seconds left. As the Knights
were bringing the ball up court, their bench was hit with the technical. Cagianello
hit the first of the two free throws but missed the second leaving Union with
their biggest lead, 39-28. However, the ball was given back to Clarkson and
Kevin Williams knocked down both free throws to cut Union"s advantage
to nine, 39-30, at the intermission.
Cagianello finished the half with 16 points
while junior forward Devon Bruce contributed 10 points and a team-high six
rebounds. Williams, meanwhile,
led Clarkson with 12 points and six rebounds.
