Kings Point, N.Y.--Merchant Marine Academy sophomore midfielder Brendan Myers scooped up a ground ball and scored the game-winning goal just 58 seconds into overtime at Captain Tomb Field, as the homestanding Mariners (2-0) knocked off visiting Union College (0-1), 7-6. The loss spoiled the debut of Dutchmen first-year head coach Erv Chambliss.
Myers picked up a ground ball eight yards in front of the net after a centering feed from behind the net was knocked down by the Dutchmen defense. He found himself all alone in front of Union netminder Will Tamm (10 saves) after gaining control of the ball and did not hesitate to deposit the ball in the back of the net to give Kings Point the victory.
The Mariners led by a 2-1 score after the first period and quickly took a three-goal advantage after back-to-back markers by freshman attack Jim Flannery just three minutes into the second frame. Union"s Andy West cut the lead to 4-2 with 9:54 left in the half, before junior attackman Matt McCarthy scored his second goal of the afternoon with 4:26 left to push the Mariners" lead back to a three-goal advantage. With 50 seconds left before intermission, Union"s sophomore attackman, Dan Myerow, converted a feed from Peter Gross (three assists) and scored the second of his three goals to cut Kings Point"s lead at halftime to 5-3.
The Dutchmen registered back-to-back goals with roughly three minutes left in the third period to knot the game at 5-5 as West tallied his second goal of the day with 3:25 to go Scott Snyder scored a man-up goal off a pass from Gross with 3:04 on the clock.
Kings Point regained the lead with 6:44 left in regulation, when senior middie and co-captain Joe Azzata scored his second goal in as many games. After the Mariners were awarded a free clear, Azzata sprinted untouched from midfield on the subsequent restart, beating Tamm and giving his team a 6-5 lead.
The Mariners" lead lasted until there were 64 seconds left in regulation as Myerow completed his hat trick with a man-up goal. Gross provided the assist on the play.
Freshman attack Sean Dougherty tallied his fifth goal of the season for the Mariners while freshman keeper John Pagano stopped nine shots in net and scooped up a team-high seven ground balls. Among Pagano"s saves was a point-blank stop of Gross with 2:45 left in regulation, which would have tied the game at that point.
Tamm led all players with eight ground balls, while Myerow and Bryan Bendjy scooped up six ground balls apiece for the Dutchmen.
