Julia Davis scores five goals to lead Union over Rensselaer, 10-7

Box Score

Senior attack woman Julia Davis scored five goals, including what proved to be the game-winner with 12:09 left in the second half, as Union outfought Rensselaer, 10-7, in an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association women's lacrosse game on Frank Bailey Field.

Davis, who had scored just two goals in the Dutchwomen's first three games, put Union up 1-0 with 27:44 left in the first half, gave the Garnet at 2-1 advantage with 20:51 showing, and tied the game at 4-4 with 7:16 remaining in the opening period. Her fourth goal of the contest, which came with 23:22 left in the game, made it 7-5 in favor of the Dutchwomen and her final tally of the afternoon gave Union an 8-6 lead. Davis also picked up an assist on freshman Alexandra Toney's goal with 9:19 remaining, which improved the Garnet's margin to 9-6.

Rensselaer, which drops to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the UCAA, scored three consecutive goals from 14:21 to 8:20 in the opening half to capture its only lead of the game, 4-3. Mary Roy, who led the Red Hawks with three goals and two assists, found the back of the net twice during the run and assisted on Mary Beth Cooley's tally at 12:04. Tanya Davis broke the deadlock with 57 seconds left before halftime, but Roy found the back of the net with nine seconds showing to give the visitor's 5-5 tie at the break.

Union, which is now 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference, opened the second half with back-to-back tallied by Liz Flanagan and Julia Davis to take a 7-5 lead with 23:22 remaining. Cooley's second goal of the game brought Rensselaer back to within one, 7-6, with 21:58 left, before consecutive tallies by Julia Davis, Toney and Molly Flanagan more than offset Jenn Celli's goal with 4:14 remaining.

Junior goaltender Meghan Gaul turned in a solid performance for the Red Hawks as she stopped 12 shots. Sophomore's Rachel Beckman, who had four saves in the first half of play, and Corey Bralower, who picked up the win by stopping three of the five shots she faced in the second half, split the goaltending duties for the Dutchwomen.
