Union makes a bid for its first Eastern College Athletic Association basketball championship since 1975 when it hosts SUNY Geneseo on Sunday (March 7) at 2 p.m. in Memorial Fieldhouse. The top-seeded Dutchmen reached the title showdown by defeating UCAA travel partner Skidmore, 73-61. Geneseo won the other semi-final game, 72-51, over Clarkson.
Union, which has a chance to tie the program's all-time single-season record for wins in a campaign, takes a 20-7 standard into its season finale.
The Dutchmen's front court of sophomore Brian Scordato, senior Ryan Freundlich and junior led the victory. Scordato, who had 10 points, six rebounds, six assists, and six steals in the 65-53 quarter-final victory over Utica, led the Dutchmen with 19 points. Freundlich contributed 14 points and nine rebounds while Bruce added nine points and nine boards. Sophomore guard John Cagianello fell well short of the 18.5 point average he took into the game, scoring just five markers, but still had a hand in the victory as he pulled down eight rebounds and dished out seven assists.
Dutchmen, who have enjoyed winning seasons each of the last six years (for the first time in over 30 years), are playing their 13th ECAC tournament since the event made its debut in 1973. Union, which won the tournament's initial title, last captured a championship in 1975. The Dutchmen last advanced to the title game in 2003, losing to Ithaca, 77-76, when their final shot rolled around the rim and fell off at the buzzer.
