Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Dutchwomen hold off Oneonta, 17-15, to finish the regular season with a record of 12-3

Box Score

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.Senior co-captain Julia Davis, playing what could very well be her last game on Frank Bailey Field, scored five times to help Union defeat Oneonta State, 17-15, in a non-league women's lacrosse contest.

The win ended the Dutchwomen's regular-season with an overall record of 12-3. Union, which will play in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association championship tournament on Saturday (at 2 p.m. against No. 3 Hamilton) at top-seeded William Smith (which will play No. 4 Skidmore Saturday at noon) has won its last five games. Oneonta is now 10-5.

Also coming up big in the scoring department for the Dutchwomen were juniors Molly Flanagan, who also found the back of the net five times, and Kathy Dolezal, who had four goals.

The first half was a wide open affair with the two teams combining for 20 goals. Union, which never trailed in the game, held a 13-7 advantage at the break with Davis and Flanagan combining for 10 of those goals.

Oneonta's defense blanked Union's top two scorers during the second 30 minutes and used the scoring combination of Erin Maybeck and Jessica Garabedian to comeback to within 16-14 with 5:49 left to play. Maybeck scored four of her game-high six goals in the second half with Garabedian contributing two of her three tallies. In fact, Maybeck and Garabedian combined with Kim Powell and Jen Hineman on a 4-0 run that brought the Red Dragons back from a 16-10 deficit.

However, Dolezal, who scored three times in the second half, picked up her fourth tally of the game with 3:42 left to offset Maybeck's goal with 48 seconds remaining.

Both goaltenders had a busy afternoon as Oneonta's Jocelyn Gafstein stopped 17 shots while Union's Rachel Beckman was credited with 11 saves.

Flanagan's five-goal outburst made her the Dutchwomen's all-time goal-scoring leader (surpassing Lauren Pastor's total of 148 set from 1995 through 1998) and gives her 198 career points, which ranks her third on the all-time scoring list behind Nina Mandel and Abby Harris, who graduated with 218 and 203 points respectively.
