Box ScoreMadison, NJ The Drew University women's lacrosse team claimed its second ECAC Mid-Atlantic Championship in five years Sunday afternoon, as the Rangers defeated Union College 16-11. The number one seeded Rangers came back from a 6-2 deficit with 4:00 remaining in the half on four unanswered goals.
Freshman Courtney Cunningham sparked the 4-0 run on a free position goal, and then assisted on the first of back-to-back goals from Kate Phillips. With seven seconds left in the half, junior Anne Luetzow sank a free position to tie the game at six all.
Drew's momentum carried over to the second stanza as Whitney McMullan became an assist machine dishing out four straight assists to Cunningham, Phillips, Luetzow, and Kara Fetter to give the Rangers a 10-6 lead at the 23:27 mark. Union's Kathy Dolezal stopped Drew's scoring spree with a free position goal at 22:31, but Fetter then found the back of the net for the 11-7 score. Luetzow and Adrienne Rumore connected minutes later to put the game away for the Rangers for a 13-7 six-goal advantage, a lead the Dutchwomen were never able to get closer to.
The Rangers held Union's top scorer from yesterday's semifinal game vs. Skidmore, Julia Davis, scoreless on the stalwart defense of freshman Rachel Hurvitz. Goalie Casey O'Brien posted 14 saves for Drew, while Rachel Beckman stopped 12 in Union's effort, as the 11th ranked Dutchwomen conclude their season with a 15-5 overall record. The 15 wins establishes a Union single-season record, breaking the old mark of 14 first set in 1999 and equaled in 2002.
Senior midfielder/defender Lauren Aliano was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. The force behind Drew's stingy defense, Aliano registered three caused turnovers and won three draw controls to go along with two groundballs on the day.
The win not only marked Drews's first ECAC Championship since 1999 when the Rangers defeated Ithaca College 9-3, but there final record of 16-4 is also the most single season wins in program history.
Junior attack woman Molly Flanagan will have to wait until next year to claim the top spot on the Dutchwomen's all-time scoring list. Flanagan, who played only five minutes before leaving the game due to a muscle cramp, scored just one goal and will enter her senior season with 163 goals, 54 assists and 217 points. Nina Mandel, who played from 2000-2003, finished her stellar career with 135-83-218. Flanagan, who already owns the 29-year old program's goal-scoring record, finished the 2004 campaign with 69-22-91 to break her own single-season scoring record of 62-14-76 set during her freshman career of 2002.
