GENEVA, N.Y.Union built a 4-1 lead then held off a late Hobart charge to defeat the Statesmen, 4-3, in the Liberty League men's soccer opener for both teams.
The Dutchmen, now 5-2 overall, led 4-1 at 41:55 before the Statesmen scored a pair of goals in the game's final 32 minutes.
David Papa's header off a cross tied the game for Union, 1-1, at 26:20 to offset a penalty kick goal by Micke Subotowicz at 25:08. The Dutchmen took a 2-1 advantage on an own goal before Kelvin Martinez and Matt Mayerhofer each scored an unassisted tally at 32:41 and 41:55, respectively.
Eduardo Ponce deLeon cut the Statesmen's deficit to 4-2 at 58:01 before Subotowicz scored his second goal of the game, this one coming off a free kick, at 83:59.
Hobart finished the game with a 11-5 shot on goal advantage and outshot the Dutchmen 19-5 overall.
