Dutchmen Win Fourth in a Row by Defeating Skidmore, 80-75, in Liberty League Opener

Box Score

Saratoga Springs, NY--Senior forward Devon Bruce led five Dutchmen in double digits as he scored 20 points and freshman forward Kyle Grimm led a tough defensive effort down the stretch to lead Union to their fourth consecutive win, 80-75, in the Liberty League opener for both teams.  The Dutchmen are now 6-5 overall while the Thoroughbreds fell to 6-4.

The game was a see-saw battle throughout with neither team able to produce the knockout blow.  Tied at 73-73 with 3:41 left to play, Union took a 78-75 advantage and finally put the game away when Junior guard John Cagianello hit both ends of a one-and-one with 1.4 seconds showing.

Junior forward Brian Scordato, who missed the last three games while recovering from an ankle injury, gave the Dutchmen their final led of the game, 76-73, when he knocked down a three-pointer with 2:41 showing.  Junior guard Chris Murphy increased Union's advantage to 78-73 with a pair of free throws with 32 seconds remaining before Skidmore's Fran Murray brought the Thoroughbreds back to within 78-75 with 24 ticks left.  Skidmore missed a chance to tie the game when a three-point attempt was off the mark with two seconds left before Cagianello, who was fouled on the rebound, iced the win with his two charity shots.

Cagianello finished with 16 points while sophomore guard Joe Mackey, who led the Dutchmen with six assists, and Scordato each had 13 markers.  Murphy contributed 10 markers and three assists.  Cagianello led Union on the boards with eight while Bruce contributed seven.  Grimm finished with a game-high three steals, all coming in the final five minutes of the game.
