Dutchmen Celebrate Viniar Dedication by Beating Vassar, 82-69

Schenectady, NYJohn Cagianello, Devon Bruce and Joe Mackey combined for 58 points, 19 rebounds and eight assists to lead Union to an 82-69 Liberty League victory over Vassar College at the Viniar Athletic Center.  The victory not only improved the Dutchmen's overall record to 7-6 (2-1 in the conference), it put an exclamation point on the dedication of Union's brand new basketball facility.  An enthusiastic crowd gave donor Dave Viniar, Class of 1976, a standing ovation as he cut the ceremonial ribbon after the game.

Trailing by two with 13:29 left to play on Seth Taft's three-point field goal, Mackey, a sophomore guard, connected on one of his four tres to give the Dutchmen a lead they would not relinquish, 56-55, with 12:59 showing.  Mackey's field goal started Union on a 20-9 run that saw the Dutchmen carry a 74-62 advantage into the final 2:58. 

Cagianello finished with a game-high 21 points followed by Bruce's 19 markers and Mackey's 18.  Brian Scordato contributed 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Vassar, which fell to 6-5, 0-2 in the league, saw Judson Winton scored 14 points to go over 1,000 for his career at 1,006.  Lawrence Avitabile led the Brewers with 19 points while Seth Taft added 15.
