The loss not only broke the Garnet's five-game win streak, it dropped the defending league champions to 4-1 in the circuit, 10-4 overall. The Herons, meanwhile, improved to 4-0 in the league, 9-4 overall.
Two free throws by junior guard Kate DeSorrento gave Union a 12-7 lead with 12:42 left in the opening period before William Smith ended the half by outscoring Union 32-7 to take a 39-19 lead into the locker room. The Dutchwomen missed 15 of their final 16 field goal attempts in the opening 20 minutes.
Union closed to within 11 points four times in the second half but could not get any closer.
Junior forward Courtney Shepard led the Dutchwomen with 17 points while junior guard Erika Eisenhut added 14 and sophomore forward Krystal Hammond 11. Hammond and Shepard led the Garnet's rebounding efforts with nine and eight, respectively.
