Box ScoreSchenectady, N.Y. (Oct. 27, 2005) Senior Kristin Murphy (Branford, CT/Branford) scored 1:32 into overtime to lift Union to a 5-4 win at home against Oneonta in field hockey action. Murphy sent a blast from the top of the box off a penalty corner for her second goal of the game. The Red Dragons clawed their way back from a four-goal deficit to force the extra session but the Dutchwomen were able to push the ball upfield and force the scoring opportunity.
Union scored two goals within the first 16 minutes of the first half for the early advantage. Junior Jessica Trotter (St. Louis, MO) opened the scoring at 5:14 with a shot in front that snuck by Oneonta goalie Lindsey Hendricks (Warrensburg, NY/Warrensburg). Emily French (North Andover, MA/Brooks School) set up the goal with a feed from up top. Sarah Klopfer (Hollis, NH/Lawrence Academy) made it 2-0 just over 10 minutes later with her fifth goal of the season.
Oneonta had a chance to break into Union's lead with 56 seconds left in the first half after being awarded a penalty shot. A high stick foul was called when a Union defender knocked the ball away as it headed into the top corner of the goal. Goalie Elise Wakeland (Arundel, ME/Kennebunk) denied Kate Yarmowich's shot though with a diving save to her right.
The Dutchwomen added two more early in the second half to take a 4-0 lead. Murphy scored her first goal of the game 5:19 in before Trotter added her second of the night just under 14 minutes later. Murphy converted on a shot in front from a pass across the goal crease by Hillary Benoit (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln Sudbury). French assisted on Trotter's goal with another feed from up top.
The duo of Yarmowich and Somer Shuffield (East Rochester, NY/East Rochester) combined for two goals apiece after that to lead the Red Dragons back into contention. Shuffield struck first for Oneonta at 56:03, taking a feed from Yarmowich on the side and beating Wakeland. Yarmowich made it 4-2 just over two minutes later, converting on another penalty shot attempt.
Oneonta got its next two goals in the final 3:14 of regulation. Shuffield knocked in her second of the game in front at 66:46 after taking a pass from Jessica Piacente (Putnam Valley, NY/Walter Panas) to set the stage for the dramatic closing. With 1:17 left in the game Oneonta's Musu Jackson-Buckner (Buffalo, NY/The Buffalo) intercepted a cross field pass in front of Union's goal and charged in on Wakeland. Union's netminder came out and knocked Jackson-Buckner to the ground, awarding the Red Dragons with another penalty shot. Once again Yarmowich stepped up and converted with a hard shot to the back of the net that rang off the back post.
Union controlled the ball on the opening whistle of overtime and charged up field on the right side. French took the penalty corner for the Dutchwomen and sent the ball up top to Chelsea Harris (White River Junction, VT/Hartford) who made a perfect set up for Murphy to tee off and send the ball screaming into the back of the net to end the game.
Wakeland finished with seven saves for Union in the win, while Hendricks stopped nine shots for Oneonta (9-8-0). The Dutchwomen held a slight advantage in shots on goal, 14-12.
Union closed out the regular season at 10-8-0 overall and will now face Liberty League Tournament host, William Smith on Friday, November 4th at 11:00 a.m.
