Late goal lifts Western New England over Union in NCAA men's soccer playoff game, 2-1

Box Score

DANBURY, CT Forward Evan Heymann scored his second of the game with just 2:53 remaining in regulation to lift Western New England to a 2-1 victory over Union College in an NCAA Division III Second Round playoff game at Westside Athletic Complex Sunday.

The Golden Bears, who defeated host Western Conn. State Saturday, improved to 21-2-0 and will advance to play at Plattsburgh State next weekend. Union finished the season with a 17-4-1 mark.

Heymann took a pass in front of the Union net from the right corner of the field from Brian Dill to give the Golden Bears the victory. He had tied the game at 72:05 with a lofted kick from approximately 30 yard out in front over a defender and the keeper after a long pass.

Union took a 1-0 lead at 36:59 of the first half, as sophomore forward Casey Ftorek (Bedford, MA/Taft School) notched his team-leading 17th goal of the year. Ftorek headed in the ball close in front from a free kick from Matt Acciani (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East). Ftorek, the Liberty League Offensive Player of the Year, finished with a school record 44 points, and his 17 goal total was one shy of the school record.

Union freshman goalkeeper Rob Kramer (Westport, CT/Staples) made four saves while Chris Wilk stopped seven for the Golden Bears. Union had a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks, and Western New England had 10 fouls to the Dutchmen's eight. The Dutchmen took 14 total shots, including eight on net and two on the net by Jon Bullock (Manchester, CT/Loomis Chaffee).

The Dutchmen broke school records with 17 wins and 67 goals in the 2005 season.
