Schenectady, N.Y. (Nov. 13, 2005) Union and Rochester battled through 110 minutes of scoreless soccer in the second round of the NCAA Division III women's tournament at College Park Field this afternoon. Unlike the first meeting between the two teams that ended in a scoreless tie during the regular season, this time a winner had to be determined. The Yellowjackets laid claim to that title by defeating the Dutchwomen 4-2 in a shootout and earning a trip to the next round. The shootout loss brought an end to a successful season for Union who finished at 18-1-3. Meanwhile Rochester advances to face Oneonta State next weekend.
As expected it was a defensive clash between Union and Rochester that saw just eight combined shots on goal. The Yellowjackets struck first in the fourth minute of the game when Emily Urbanczyk got a shot off inside the penalty box but her attempt was right at goalie Julie Gawronski (Dunkirk, NY). Three minutes later Union countered with a one-timer in front by Erika Eisenhut (Mohawk, NY). The ball came in off a cross from the left side by Caitlin Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA) but Eisenhut misfired on the shot and the ball sailed wide.
In the 23rd minute Stephanie Klenotich won the ball off a Rochester corner kick but her header attempt was wide of the back post.
Rochester had another early opportunity in the second half, coming 1:59 in when the Yellowjackets created a 2-on-1 opportunity. Urbanczyk set up Mary Walsh with a point-blank shot inside the penalty box but the sent was right at Gawronski once again.
In the 74th minute Stephanie Cronan (Marblehead, MA) could not settle a cross from Ashley Brown (Plainville, CT) and the ball deflected off Cronan's foot right to Rochester goalie Adrianne Hulchanski.
Urbanczyk created one last chance to end the game in regulation with two seconds left off a corner kick. She won the ball inside the penalty box and fired a shot from 10 yards out but it grazed the top of the crossbar.
With 1:31 remaining in the second overtime Union came back with a chance to win off a corner kick. Marissa VanWoeart (Schenectady, NY) headed the ball down and to the right post but a Rochester defender was right there to stop it at the goal line.
Rochester kicked first in the shootout and Ashley Van Vechten tucked the ball inside the right corner. Brown countered for Union to even things up. After Walsh put the Yellowjackets back on top Hulchanski kept them there by stopping Chelsea Hargis (East Lyme, CT) on the next attempt by the Dutchwomen. Rochester's Sharon Hay and Eisenhut were successful in there attempts. Kristen Leskow put the advantage back at two in favor of the Yellowjackets with a conversion following Eisenhut. Rochester would not need its final turn to try and wrap things up, on Union's fourth attempt Sara Wilson (Wilbraham, MA) got under the ball and sent her shot over the crossbar.
Gawronski finished with three saves for Union and Hulchanski made four in the win for Rochester. The Dutchwomen held a slight advantage in corner kicks 7-6 and in total shots 15-11.
