Union loses to St. Lawrence in a 2-1 defeat

SCHENECTADY, NY. - Junior midfielder Axel Galeano, Queens, NY/Brooklyn Friends) scored both goals as St. Lawrence defeated Union, 2-1, to win the 2005 Liberty League Men's Soccer Championship Saturday at Union's College Park.

Union falls to 15-3-1 and had a nine-game winning streak snapped, while St. Lawrence is 9-7-2 and will enter the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship.

St. Lawrence came out strong by scoring a goal in the first two minutes of the game, as Galeano received a long cross from the left side, drilling it in past the low far post from 15 yards out at 1:34. With @0 minutes left in the first half, Galeano scored again, beating the keeper, one-on-one from five yards out.

Union got on the board when Wade Cheatham (Edwards, CO./Vail Mountain School) connected with one of his three attempts on goal 2:48 after the second half began. Cheatham notched his eight goal of the year when he scored from five yards out.

Both teams had 20 shots on the day, and St. Lawrence had a 7-3 corners advantage.

Rob Kramer (Westport, CT./Staples) had 11 saves for Union, while Emilio Colletta (]Montreal, QUE./Marianapolis College) had three saves on the match for the Saints.

The NCAA field will be announced either Sunday or Monday.
