TROY, NYGuard Paris Moore scored nine straight points to turn a 51-49 Rensselaer deficit into a 58-51 lead as the Red Hawks defeated Union, 64-59, in a key Liberty League showdown. The victory gave the 5-6 Red Hawks a season sweep over the Dutchmen and left then just one-half game behind Union in the battle for the fourth and final playoff position. The Red Hawks will take on 5-6 Vassar on Tuesday night and will close out the regular season next weekend on the road at Hobart and Hamilton, respectively. Union, which is now 6-6 in the league, will host St. Lawrence and Clarkson on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
Up by two at the half, 30-28, the Dutchmen opened the second 20 minutes with a three-point basket by sophomore guard Joe Mackey before taking their biggest lead of the half, 35-25, on Devon Bruce's jumper with 18:04 left to play. Moore produced the game's seventh tie when he connected on a three-point basket with 10:09 showing to make the score 47-47. Junior guard John Cagianello's three-point basket with 4:15 left to play gave the Dutchmen their last advantage, 51-49, before Moore took control of the game. RPI led by as many as nine down the stretch.
Cagianello paced Union with 18 points with Brian Scordato scoring 15 and Mackey contributing 13. Moore had a game-high 21 points for the Red Hawks, who finished with a 42-22 rebounding advantage.
