Box ScoreROCHESTER, NY -- Senior attack Pete Gross (Larchmont/Salisbury) scored at 3:23 of overtime to lift Union College to a 12-11 victory over the Rochester Institute of Technology in men's lacrosse action Saturday at Turf Field.
The Dutchmen improved to 2-2 on the season while the Tigers fell to 0-2. Both of RIT's losses have come in overtime.
Dan Myerow (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln Sudbury) scored five goals and added an assist for the Dutchmen, while Gross had two tallies and four assists for Union. Bill Condon (West Hartford, CT/Conard) also scored two goals for the guests, while the Dutchmen had single tallies from Bryan Bendjy (Ronkonkoma/Salisbury), Greg Scott (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) and Ben Birnbaum (Brookline, MA/Hyde).
Zach Bednarz led the Tigers with three goals and five assists while David Thering had six points, including four goals. Andrew Ruoco scored three times for the hosts.
Condon gave the Dutchmen an 11-9 lead at 9:16 of the fourth, but RIT scored twice in the final 4:24, as David Thering tied it up with 1:26 left in regulation for RIT.
RIT killed off a one-minute penalty in overtime and cleared the ball. Thering had a shot blocked in the overtime, leading to a clearing situation for Union. The Dutchmen cleared successfully and got it to Gross, who drove to the cage and beat RIT goalie John Foley for the game-winning tally.
RIT out shot Union 64-27 and had 49 ground balls to Union's 25. The Tigers won 17-of-26 face-offs. Union went 2-for-6 on man-up situations while the Tigers were 2-for-10.
Rob Oram (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) made 26 saves for the Dutchmen, while Gross had eight ground balls to lead the visitors. Foley stopped 11 for the Tigers.
Union is idle until a March 21 game against Colby, which will be the first of three contests during a spring trip in Tampa, Florida.
