Union Edged by Rensselaer in Season Finale, 14-12

Box Score

Schenectady, NY (April 30, 2005) Union (6-9, 2-4) closed out its season with a tough 14-12 loss at home against cross-town rival Rensselaer (6-6, 4-2) Saturday evening. After falling behind early in the game the Dutchmen battled back to take a two-goal lead in the third quarter. They were unable to sustain the advantage though and the Red Hawks pulled away late in the fourth. Five different players scored two goals for Union including Andy West (Salem, NH) who also added an assist for a team-high three points.

Rensselaer jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter led by a two-goal effort by Ryan Frisch during the run. In the second quarter West brought Union back to within a goal with two of the next three strikes to make it 4-3. The next goal came from Rensselaer's Adam LoGiudice with 5:06 left before the half on the man advantage. Union capitalized 30 seconds later on its own man advantage with a goal by Bill Condon (West Hartford, CT) to make it 5-4 game heading into halftime.

Condon added his second goal of the night at 14:36 of the third period to tie the score until Peter Rice scored an up-man goal just over four minutes later to put the score back in favor of the Red Hawks. Following a Dan Myerow (Sudbury, MA) goal that tied the game up once again, Gregg Scott (Niskayuna, NY) gave Union the lead with the next two goals to make it 8-6 in favor of the Dutchmen. Rensselaer went on another four-goal run after that beginning with Rice's goal at 6:05 and ending with PJ McComb's tally with 1:34 left in the third quarter to make it 10-8.

Tom Simmons (Salisbury, CT) opened up scoring in the fourth quarter at 12:16 to make it a one-goal game once again but LoGiudice responded 13 seconds. Myerow kept Union close with his second goal of the game at 10:47 to bring his team back to within one. Rensselaer scored the next three to take a four goal lead with eight minutes left. Union came back to cut it to two on the strength of two goals from Mike Sparico (Riverside, CT). That was as close as the Dutchmen could get though with Rensselaer keeping possession for the majority of the final four minutes to thwart the comeback.

Goalkeeper Will Tamm (Millbrook, NY) made 13 saves for Union in the loss while Ryan Michaels stopped 10 shots for Rensselaer.

The game was tightly contested throughout. The Red Hawks held a slight advantage in shots (38-30) and faceoffs (17-13) while Union picked up 43 ground balls to 36 for Rensselaer.
