Box ScoreColorado Springs, CO (May 14, 2005) Union saw a successful season come to an unfortunate end in the first round of the NCAA Regionals, falling to Colorado College 17-12 at Stewart Field. The Dutchwomen, who were making their third NCAA appearance, led early on but could not contain a Tigers offense that averages 13.5 goals per game. They finish the season at 13-4 while Colorado College improved to 11-1.
Union struck first with a goal from Caitlin Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA) just 2:12 into the game on an assist from Kathy Dolezal (Clearwater, FL). Cuozzo finished with four goals to lead her team and added an assist. Colorado College responded just over three minutes later on a free position goal by Robin Harvey to tie the game. Union capitalized on its own free position attempt at the 21 minute mark when freshman Erin Lawton (Flourtown, PA) sent a low shot past Tigers goaltender Alana Dalton.
Colorado College answered back following Lawton's goal with four unanswered that began when Jen Alpern scored unassisted at 16:44. Cassie Abel scored the last two goals during the run, her second coming unassisted with 9:23 left to make it 5-2 in favor of the Tigers. The Dutchwomen were able to cut it to one by tallying the game's next two goals. Molly Flanagan (Simsbury, CT) scored her first of three on the day before Cuozzo struck again at 6:49 to make it 5-4. That would be as close as Union would get though. They had trouble holding onto the ball throughout the contest which prevented them from getting into any kind of an offensive rhythm.
Colorado College pulled away with another four-goal run. Two of those goals came from Helen Sneath. The team's leading scorer, Kate Fitzgerald, started the run at 4:49. Dolezal scored with 18 seconds left in the half to make it a 9-5 game.
Hannah Underdahl scored to for Colorado College to open up second half scoring. Play would be suspended after that with 23:24 left for a 58 minute lightening delay. After play resumed the Tigers picked up right where they left off, scoring four of the games next five goals. In between a pair of Colorado College tallies Cuozzo picked up her third of the afternoon.
With the score 14-6, Flanagan scored back-to-back strikes to make it a six-goal game. Colorado College matched that though with back-to-back goals of their own from Fitzgerald and Abel. Union scored four more goals after that but it was not enough. After Cuozzo scored her fourth and final goal Fitzgerlad wrapped up the Tigers scoring with an unassisted goal at 1:17. Dolezal scored with 1:00 left and Caitlin Milbury (Lynfield, MA) closed things out with four seconds left.
Dalton finished with 10 saves in the win for Colorado College. Union starter Rachel Beckman (Needham, MA) finished with three first half saves. She was replaced at with 14:51 left in the second half by Stephanie Burlton (Coquitlam, BC) who made one save.
Fitzgerald and Abel both finished with four goals. Fitzgerald also had three assists while Abel had two.
Shots were even at 31 apiece. Colorado College held the advantage in ground balls, 35-29.
