Box Score

Schenectady, NY (Sept. 17, 2005) In a matchup of regional rivals, No. 8 Union and No. 9 Rochester dueled to a 0-0 double overtime draw Saturday afternoon at Garris Field. The Dutchwomen nearly came away with the win in the 90th minute. A shot by Sara Wilson (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) with 23 seconds left was headed toward the inside far post before Rochester goalkeeper Molly Leitch (Rocky River, OH/Rocky River) made a diving, fingertip save to turn the ball away at the last moment.

Union had another chance to strike in the 57th minute when Cassandra Mariani (Boonton, NJ) received the ball just inside the six near the right post, but could not control the shot and sent it just wide.

The two teams battled in the midfield for most of the first half. Rochester recorded the first shot on goal in the 31st minute when Kristen Leskow (Endwell, NY/Union-Endicott) fired the ball in from 20 yards out. The ball was shot right at Union goalkeeper Julie Gawronski (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk) though and she came up with the easy save.

Rochester's Mary Walsh (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford) was also stopped on the doorstep by Gawronski with 1:25 left in the first overtime session. Walsh took a pass just past midfield and raced down the left side on goal. As she approached the net, with a defender on her heels, Gawronski came out to challenge and smothered the ball as Walsh prepared to shoot. Another shot by the Yellowjackets with 23 seconds left in the second overtime was also covered by Gawronski. The senior netminder finished with five saves in her first shutout of the season.

At the other end Leitch, who replaced Adrianne Hulchanski (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) to start the second half made two stops, while Hulchanski did not see a single shot on goal.

Rochester held a slight advantage in shots, 11-7. They move to 3-1-1 on the season while Union remains unbeaten at 5-0-1.

Union begins Liberty League play against cross-town rival Rensselear in its next match. The Dutchwomen will host the Red Hawks on Friday, September 23 at 4:00 p.m. Rochester continues play on the road as they are at RIT this Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
