Box Score

Schenectady, NY (Sept. 28, 2005) Union made it four in a row with a convincing 5-1 win over Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts Wednesday evening at College Park Field. Sophomore Casey Ftorek (Bedford, MA/Taft School) scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner and added an assist to pace the Dutchmen. Union improved to 7-1-1 while the Trailblazers fell to 1-6-1.

Ftorek scored the first two goals of the game within a 8:03 span to set the tone for Union. His first came at 12:23 when he tucked the ball away to the inside right post past MCLA goalie Zach Natale (Florance, MA/Holyoke Catholic). Junior Luke LaBella (Middletown, CT/Taft School) made the Taft School connection with a nice lead pass inside the penalty box. Ftorek stuck again in the 21st minute. This time Wade Cheatham (Edwards, CO/Vail Mountain School) connected with a through ball that Ftorek sent to the inside far post to give him his second goal of the game and fifth in the last four.

Union extended its lead to 4-0 after Chris Poey (Amherst, MA/Amherst Regional) and Matt Acciani (Cherry Hill, NJ) both found the back of the net. Poey scored his eighth goal of the season at 26:30 when he redirected the ball in front off a shot by Cheatham. Acciani headed the ball in front past Natale in the 52nd minute for his first goal of the season.

The Trailblazers got on the scoreboard in the 69th minute when Raul Escobar (Ashley Falls, MA/Wilbraham Monson Academy) eased the ball past Union goalie Rob Kramer (Westport, CT/Staples) with a shot to the inside left post. Adam Tomich (Sheffield, MA/Mount Everett) was credited with the assist. Kramer finished with two saves on the night after replacing starter Rob Shirley (Wrentham, MA/King Philip) to start the second half. Shirley made one save to pick up his second win of the season.

Freshman Ian Brennan (Bellemead, NJ/Montogomery) wrapped up the scoring with his first goal of the season in the 71st minute. He headed the ball past Natale after taking a cross from Josh Butler (Cazenovia, NY/Manlius Pebble Hill). Natale finished with three saves.

Union outshot MCLA 18-8 for the match, holding them to two first half shots.

Union is back in action on Saturday, October 1st when they head North to face Plattsburgh for a 7:00 p.m. matchup.
