Liberty League/SUNYAC Volleyball Challenge Review

Lauren Lesce had 62 assists in Union's win over New Paltz.

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Union College hosted the 2006 Liberty League/SUNYAC Volleyball Challenge for two days at the Viniar Athletic Center and Memorial Fieldhouse. The Dutchwomen were joined by Liberty League schools Clarkson and Skidmore, while the SUNYAC featured Brockport, Geneseo, New Paltz and Potsdam. The weekend review follows.

Geneseo def. Union, 30-27, 30-14, 30-27
Kate Barth (Babylon, NY/St. Anthony's) had 10 kills, seven digs and three service aces to lead the Knights (15-12) in their second three-game sweep of the tournament. Jess Laemlin (Webster, NY/Schroeder) recorded 20 digs, nine kills and six aces, and Maddy Maier (Brookhaven, NY/Bellport) finished with 22 assists. Emma Fritz (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) added eight digs in the win. Union stood 8-14 after the match.

Potsdam def. Clarkson, 30-28, 28-30, 30-24, 32-30  
Clarkson featured 27 digs from Katie Benson (Ashton, MD/Sherwood) and 46 assists from Jenna Stock (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown). Hilary Lockwood (Victor, NY/Victor) had 17 kills for the Golden Knights (4-20) while Potsdam improved to 15-10.

Julie LaSpina (Roslyn Heights, NY/Roslyn) had 15 kills and Lauren Lesce (Rochester, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland) finished with 50 assists as Union improved to 9-14. Jen Merinder (Andover, MA/Andover) recorded 16 kills and Veronica Mynders (Port Jervis, NY/Minisink Valley) finished the match with 20 digs.

Skidmore def. New Paltz, 28-30, 30-24, 25-30, 30-21, 15-11
After trailing in the match two games to one, the Thoroughbreds (13-9) won the next two to improve their record to 13-9. Laura Olsted (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto) dished out 66 assists, Lauren Dinsdale (Harrington Park, NJ/NV Regional) had 36 digs and Erica Duncan (San Francisco, CA/Ignatius) added 23 digs with 16 kills in the win. Skidmore also was led by Darryl Manzer (Camden, NY/Camden), who had 28 kills and 10 blocks.

Brockport def. Clarkson, 30-21, 30-24, 25-30, 30-21
Brockport finished the weekend 20-7 with their fourth win in the tourney. Kaylen Fessette (Plattsburgh, NY/Beekmantown) led the victors with 42 assists and Katie Feldman (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) had 13 digs, while Cara Voll (Fairport, NY/Penfield) finished with 11 kills. Clarkson (4-21) got 15 digs from Katie Benson (Ashton, MD/Sherwood) and 15 assists from Jenna Stock (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown). Hilary Lockwood (Victor, NY/Victor) added 11 kills.

Skidmore (14-9) won their second match of the day. Laura Olsted (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto) had 13 assists and Lauren Dinsdale (Harrington Park, NJ/NV Regional) posted 27 digs. Erica Duncan (San Francisco, CA/Ignatius) had had 12 kills and 15 digs and Murray Koch (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto) finished with 22 digs and 12 kills. Geneseo (15-13) featured seven kills and eight blocks from Michele Guido (Williston Park, NY/Mineola) and 21 kills, three aces, 32 digs and three blocks from Jess Laemlin (Webster, NY/Schroeder). Ashley Saltzman (Penfield, NY/Penfield) had a match high 49 assists and 12 digs. and Kate Barth (Baylon, NY/St. Anthony's) finished the match with 14 kills, three aces, 14 digs and three blocks.       
 
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13:

Union def. New Paltz, 24-30, 30-18, 24-30, 31-29, 18-16
Erin Schumaker (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) posted 18 kills and Mary Volko (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) added 17 kills to lead host Union to a comeback victory over New Paltz. The Hawks were ranked fourth in the state entering the match. The Dutchwomen (8-13) also were led by Lauren Lesce (Rochester, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland), who dished out 62 assists. Kaitlyn Evans (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) and Danna De Blasio (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont) had 17 digs each in the win. Stephanie Bova (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) led New Paltz with 37 assists and 12 digs, while Kim Clouston (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) had a match high 32 digs. Franchesca Rodriguez (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) added 20 kills and 12 digs for New Paltz (18-6).

Brockport def. Skidmore, 30-24, 30-25, 29-31, 30-25
Brockport, ranked second in the state, improved to 18-7 with the victory over Skidmore (11-9). The Golden Eagles were led by a career high 62 assists from Kaylen Fessette (Plattsburgh, NY/Beekmantown), and 17 digs each from Katie Feldman (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) and Alicia Capparelli (East Bridgeport, NY/Cicero North Syracuse). Shea Gilmore (Merritt, NY/Northern Adirondack) added 17 kills. Skidmore was paced by the 38 assists from Laura Olsted (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto) and the 28 digs from Lauren Dinsdale (Harrington Park, NJ/NV Regional), along with Darryl Manzer (Camden, NY/Camden), who recorded 19 kills and six blocks.

Geneseo def. Clarkson, 30-28, 30-16, 30-28
Kate Barth (Babylon, NY/St. Anthony's) recorded 11 kills, nine digs and two service aces as Geneseo improved to 14-12 with a three-game sweep over Clarkson (4-18). Ashley Saltzman (Penfield, NY/Penfield) featured 26 assists and two aces for the Knights, while Jess Laemlin (Webster, NY/Schroeder) added 11 digs with eight kills and three aces. Geneseo's Michele Guido (Williston Park, NY/Mineola) served up four aces with five kills. Katie Benson (Ashton, MD/Sherwood) led Clarkson with 18 digs and Jenna Stock (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) dished out 14 assists. Claire Horvath (South Bend, IN/St. Joseph's) finished with seven kills for the Golden Knights.
                               
Skidmore def. Potsdam, 30-26, 30-24, 30-24
Skidmore (12-9) bounced back from an earlier defeat to sweep the Bears. Laura Olsted (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto) led the victory with 39 assists and Lauren Dinsdale (Harrington Park, NJ/NV Regional) had a match best 36 digs. Erica Duncan (San Francisco, CA/Ignatius) had 17 kills and 17 digs and Murray Koch (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto) finished with 11 kills and 11 digs. Potsdam was highlighted by Julie Vint (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) with 12 kills and Jamie Kraus (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) with 10 kills, and the 35 assists of Sarah Cunningham (Gananoque, NY/Gananoque). Priska Wilson (Warwick, NY/Warwick) added 25 digs for the Bears.

Brockport def. Union, 30-20, 30-18, 30-32, 30-16
Kaylen Fessette (Plattsburgh, NY/Beekmantown) had 45 assists and 10 digs to lead Brockport to a second win on the day, and the Golden Eagles improved to 19-7 overall. Cara Voll (Fairport, NY/Penfield) added 13 kills in the triumph. Union (8-14) featured 13 digs from Danna De Blasio (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont) blocked seven and Mary Volko (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) finished the match with eight kills.

Stephanie Bova (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) compiled 46 assists as New Paltz improved to 19-6 with the three game sweep. Kim Clouston (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) had 16 kills and made 15 digs and Franchesca Rodriguez (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) added 13 digs while finishing the match with 12 kills.
