ONEONTA, NY -- Senior Jessica Trotter (St. Louis, MO/John Burroughs) and sophomore Mallory Mason (Southborough, MA/Algonquin) each scored a pair of goals to lead the Union Dutchwomen to a convincing road win against Oneonta State this afternoon in non-conference field hockey action. Union dominated the final 20 minutes of the first half and the opening 15 minutes of the second half with five unanswered goals in the win.
Oneonta (8-9) got on the scoreboard first with its opening shot of the game off of a penalty corner. Junior Jacki Rose (Marathon, NY/Marathon) took the push-pass from classmate Samantha Merritt (Dover, NH/Dover) and blasted it by the Union goalie.
It was all Union after the goal by the Red Dragons, with the first coming in the 22nd minute at the end of a penalty corner. Mason took a crossing pass from senior Hilary Benoit (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln Sudbury) and banged a shot passed a sprawled Oneonta goalie.
Six minutes later Mason scored again this time getting her stick on a shot by freshman Alison Krywanczyk (Essex Jct., VT/Rice Memorial) and tipping it by the goalie for a 2-1 lead.
Krywanczyk added an unassisted goal in the 32nd minute of play to give Union a 3-1 lead that they would take into halftime along with a 16-4 advantage in shots.
Two goals less than one minute apart just 11 minutes into the second half gave the visitors a commanding lead at 5-1. Trotter scored her first goal at 45:58 and Benoit followed at 46:48.
Oneonta cut the lead to 5-2 in the 54th minute on an unassisted goal by sophomore Marissa Chiapperino (Carmel, NY/Carmel). Freshman Kathryn Kubaryk (Warrensburg, NY/Warrensburg) made a rush into the circle and lost the ball, but fortunately Chiapperino was there to collect the loose ball.
Trotter gave Union its four-goal lead back with an unassisted goal just over one minute later on a reverse stick shot from in front of the goal.
Oneonta senior Megan Flaherty (Fishkill, NY/John Jay) scored the final goal for Oneonta with just over two minutes to play for the final 6-3.
Liz Stanford (##) made four saves for Union.
The game marked the end of the regular season for the Dutchwomen, who finish 11-6.
