ONEONTA, NY – The Union College volleyball team fell 3-1 to host Oneonta in non-conference action Tuesday evening in the regular-season finale for both squads.
Union was led on the attack by sophomore
Erin Schumaker (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs), who finished with 11 kills. Defensively the Dutchwomen were led by junior
Danna Di Blasio (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) and sophomore
Kaitlyn Evans (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg), who had 25 digs and 17 digs respectively. Freshman
Lauren Lesce (Rochester, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland) had a team-high 25 assists in directing the offense.
Sophomore Courtney Wavercak (Syracuse, NY/C.W. Baker) had 16 kills and junior Caity Welch (St. Verpalnck, NY/Hendrick Hudson) added 10 kills and a team-high 26 digs to lead Oneonta.
Oneonta (22-15) had control of the opening game jumping out quickly 8-2 before Union (12-19) called a timeout. After the timeout Oneonta continued to build its lead getting it to as many as 10 points at 21-11 en route to the 30-23 win.
In the second game the Dutchwomen jumped out early to a 6-1 lead and 9-4 before Oneonta had to call a timeout. When play resumed the Red Dragons battled back to tie the game at 16-16 on a combined block by junior Morgan Brooks (Beaver Dams, NY/Horseheads) and sophomore Denise Hardy (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) and then took the lead on another block by Brooks and Hardy.
Oneonta had a lead of 22-20 before Union ran off eight unanswered points to take a commanding lead at 28-22. Oneonta cut into Union's lead on the strength of back-to-back blocks at the net to get to 28-25 forcing another Union timeout.
In game three Oneonta trailed 3-2 before running off six straight points to take the lead for good en route to a 30-20 win. The Red Dragons built its lead to as many as nine points on two occasions during the game.
The fourth game was a little tighter with five ties and three lead changes. The final lead change came at 16-15 for Oneonta on a kill by Brooks. Oneonta held onto a slim lead at 21-20 before putting together a 9-2 run to close out the match.
The Dutchwomen are back in action this weekend at the Liberty League championships at Skidmore. On Friday, Union plays Skidmore at 4 p.m., and takes on St. Lawrence at 6 p.m. The Dutchwomen face Vassar at 11 a.m. Saturday before facing Clarkson at 1 p.m.
