Second-half goals lift Endicott over Union, 3-2

SCHENECTADY, NY – The Endicott College women's soccer team scored three goals in an eight-minute span to open the second half of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships first round en route to a 3-2 upset win over host Union College Saturday afternoon at College Park Field.
Union (14-3-3) opened the scoring just 18 minutes into the game when Caitlin Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA/ King Phillip Regional) picked up a pass from Allison Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA/ King Phillip Regional) among a mess of defenders and netted her 10th goal of the season from 12 yards out.
Senior Caitlin D'Amario (E. Longmeadow, MA) and freshman Caitlin Flynn (Mattituck, NY) had a hand in all three Gulls' goals in the second half, as Flynn sparked the scoring blitz in the 49th minute, carrying a pass from D'Amario and drawing out Union freshman goaltender Mia Simone (Rexford, NY/ Academy of the Holy Names). She placed her shot in the extreme left side of the net.
D'Amario tallied her 13th goal of the season in the 55th minute, shooting in a loose ball from 17 yards out that had been misplayed by Simone. Flynn struck again in he 57th minute as she knocked in a rebound from Kim Shields (Pomfret, CT) for her sixth goal of the season.
Chelsea Hargis (East Lyme, CT/ East Lyme) cut the Gulls' lead to one in the 76th minute with her third goal of the season. Sara Wilson (Wilbraham, MA/ Minnechaug Regional) passed to Hargis from the left side, and Hargis buried the ball in the top right of the net.
Union out-shot the Gulls, 22-7, and 10-5 in shots on net, but Endicott goalkeeper Tina Loguidice (Hyde Park, NY) came up big on several occasions to make seven saves in her 14th win of the season. Simone made two saves for Union.
The Gulls (19-3-0) will take on Worcester State in the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships at College Park Field on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
Worcester State Upsets Stevens Institute, 2-0
SCHENECTADY, NY – Second-half goals by Katelyn Bonetti (Plymouth, Mass.) and Amanda Beaudet (Auburn, Mass.) propelled the Worcester State women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Stevens Institute in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships held at College Park Field on the campus of Union College Saturday afternoon.
Bonetti broke a scoreless tie early in the second half when she carried a pass from Lauren Cush (Hudson, Mass.) past a defender and placed her shot high over the head of Stevens goaltender Erica Midttveit (Jackson, NJ) for her eighth goal of the season.
Beaudet added an insurance goal in the 80th minute, carrying the ball up the right side of the field and maintained possession despite a scuffle with a defender 24 yards out. The sophomore's shot crossed from the right to the far left of the net for her fourth goal of the season.
Stevens had several chances in the early in the second half, highlighted by a three-shot play in the 50th minute. Leslie Kallberg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) shot from 17 yards out, only to be thwarted by Worcester State goalkeeper Kim Massa (Westford, Mass.). But when Massa lost control of the ball, Kallberg collected the loose ball, only this time her shot was blocked by a defender. Junior Cristina Fulgencio (Staten Island, N.Y.) powered that rebound back at the net, but Massa made a jumping save, ending the threat.
Massa made six saves for her 16th win and 13th shutout of the season, while Midttveit stopped four shots for Stevens.
Stevens held a 16-13 shot advantage in the game, while Worcester maintained a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
No. 4-seeded Worcester State will play No. 3-seeded Endicott in the second round, Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at College Park Field.
