WELLINGTON, FL -- In a matchup of two pre-season top-20 ranked NCAA Division III women's lacrosse teams, #6 Amherst defeated #17 Union, 11-7 Sunday night in the season opener for both teams at the Village Park Recreation Complex.
The game marked the debut of first-year Union head women's lacrosse coach Jessica Critchlow.
Alyssa Briody and Mary Noonan scored three goals each for the Jeffs. Union was led by Caitlin Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA/King Phillip Regional), who scored two second half goals. Other goal scorers for Union were Alexandra Toney (Bayville, NY/Locust Valley), Robyn Ross (Newton, MA/Newton North), Stephanie Cronan (Marblehead, MA/Marblehead) and Keri Messa (Saratoga Springs, NY/Hotchkiss School). Freshman Liz Zamore (South Hero, VT/Essex) also scored for Union.
Union led 2-0 on goals by Messa and Toney in the first six minutes, and had a 3-1 halftime lead before the Jeffs took a 5-4 lead into the half. Union tied it at 26:57 on a score by Ross, and took a 6-5 lead with Cronan's goal at 26:44. Amherst tied it again at 6-6 on Noonan's second goal of the day at 25:12, and after Cuozzo gave the Dutchwomen their final lead of the day, 7-6 at 22:07, the Jeffs scored five unanswered goals. Amherst padded a two-goal lead with two tallies in the final four minutes.
Union plays another game in Wellington, Florida on Wednesday, as the Dutchwomen play Trinity (Connecticut) at 9:30 a.m.
