Dutchwomen Roll by Vassar in Liberty League Home-Opener

Schenectady, NY – Union (2-1, 1-0) made its Liberty League home-opener an impressive one with a 14-4 win against Vassar at Frank Bailey Field. It was the second straight win for the Dutchwomen, who were led by a five-goal effort from Stephanie Cronan (Marblehead, MA/Marblehead). Goaltender Stephanie Burlton (Coquitlam, BC/Milton Academy) made just four saves on eight shots on goal in the win for Union.

Union came away with the first six goals of the game to open up a comfortable lead in the first half. Caitlin Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA/King Philip Reg.) started things off with an unassisted goal in the first minute. Following a strike by Liz Zamore (South Hero, VT/Essex), Cronan scored the next two goals to make it a 4-0 game at 8:15.

Vassar responded following a pair of unassisted Union goals with one of its own from Kristin Hogan at 21:28 to make it a 6-1 game. Union closed things out in the first half with the next two goals, including a successful free position attempt by Cronan with just four seconds left.

Vassar cut into the lead with three of the first four goals of the second half. Christine Castellan and Jessica Albert scored in the first 7:08 to cut the Union lead down to five goals. Castellan scored unassisted at 2:25 and Albert followed suit at 7:08 off a feed from Kristin Hogan.

Cronan scored her third free position goal of the game just 40 seconds later to make it 9-3. Hogan kept the game within reach for Vassar with her second goal of the game at 12:38 before the Dutchwomen registered the next five goals of the game to put any thoughts of a comeback to rest.

Vassar's Ariel Nelson made 21 saves on the day.

Union held a 38-9 advantage in shots for the game. They also held a 12-8 edge in draw controls.

The Dutchwomen return to action tomorrow at Bailey Field as they host Rensselaer in a 2:00 p.m. Liberty League showdown.
