CANTON, NY -- Kevin Russell tallied six points, including three goals and three assists, as the St. Lawrence men's lacrosse team won their third consecutive game and won their Liberty League opener against the Union Dutchmen 17-1 Saturday. Russell was one of six Saints who had a multi-point effort against Union. Union fell to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in the league.
St. Lawrence took a 7-0 lead less than 11 minutes into the contest. The Saints took 32 shots on goal, while their stingy defense relinquished only 10 shots on their goaltenders.
After leading 11-0 at the half, the Saints merely extended their cushion to 16-0 by the 45:00 mark in the game. Union's Gordon Burdis (Salt Point, NY/Millbrook) would slip a shot past the Saints' third goaltender of the afternoon, Frank Maguire, to break up the shutout bid.
Russell was the game's leading scorer with six points, along with fellow attackers Carroll and Prime who each netted two goals. Centauro collected four points on a pair of goals and assists.
Between the pipes, Justin Demuth got the start and he made two saves in 30 minutes of play. He was replaced by Thomas Hollingsworth in the third, who made four saves on four shots. Maguire then relieved Hollingsworth in the final quarter, making three saves on four shots in 15 minutes of play. Union's Rob Oram (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) made 15 stops for the Dutchmen.
Union returns home to host Liberty League rival Skidmore on April 8 at 1 p.m. The Dutchmen will also make up a game against Utica on April 10 at Bailey Field at 4 p.m.
