Playoff bound women's lacrosse 12-7 winners at Hamilton

CLINTON, NY -- Junior Alexandra Toney (Bayville, NY/Locust Valley) scored four goals and added an assist and Keri Messa (Saratoga Springs, NY/Hotchkiss School) also had five points as Union posted a rain soaked 12-7 victory at Hamilton in the Liberty League finale for both schools Saturday.

The Dutchwomen join the Continentals and Skidmore with 6-2 league records. William Smith clinched first in the league with a win over Vassar, finishing 7-1, and will host Union, Hamilton and Skidmore in the tournament during the first weekend of May. Union is now 8-4 overall while Hamilton is 9-4.

Toney had 10 shots on the day and Messa had two assists with three goals for the Dutchwomen. Caitlin Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA/King Phillip Regional) also scored three goals while Stephanie Cronan (Marblehead, MA/Marblehead) and Liz Zamore (South Hero, VT/Essex) each also scored a goal for Union.

Hamilton was led by Suzy Belmont, who scored three times, and Liz Longley, who had a goal and two assists. Union had a 32-18 shot advantage and had 35 ground balls to the Continentals' 32. Rachel Beckman (Needham, MA/Needham) made six saves for the Dutchwomen, and Hamilton's Kelley Greer had 14 stops.

Trailing 1-0, Union scored five straight in a 10 minute span to take a 5-1 lead with 13:22 left in the first half. Three of the goals were scored by Toney. Hamilton scored the final three of the first half and trailed 5-4 at halftime. The Dutchwomen took over with four striaght goals for a 9-4 lead with 16:12 left to go. It was 10-7 Union with 8:09 left after Longley scored the final Hamilton goal of the day, and Messa added insurance with two tallies in the final three minutes.

Union is idle until Sunday, April 30, when the Dutchwomen play a non-league game at St. John Fisher at 2 p.m.
