Schenectady, NY – Clarkson (4-9, 2-3 Liberty League) scored seven goals in the first quarter on its way to a 16-9 win over Union (4-8, 2-2 Liberty League) at Bailey Field. The Golden Knights took advantage of a sluggish start by the Dutchmen, scoring on their first six shots on goal, to pick up their first win in four games while handing the home team their second loss in three outings. Sophomore Jonathan Miller (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) led Union with four goals in its final home game of the season. Senior Brian Hanlon scored seven goals to lead Clarkson and added two assists for nine points.
Hanlon and Greg Gibbons each scored two goals during Clarkson's opening run to give them a 7-0 lead through the first quarter. Starting goalie
Rob Oram (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) did not record a save while surrendering six goals before being replaced by
Chris Keinath (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) after 9:19.
Union got on the board 1:06 into the second quarter when
Dan Myerow (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) scored his 15
th goal of the season as the two teams traded the next four goals. Junior
Bill Condon (West Hartford, CT/Conard) assisted on the play.
A goal by
Kevin Rautenstrauch (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis Prep) at 6:26 followed Hanlon's 3
rd of the game. Brian Hoey answered back for the Golden Knights nine seconds later before
Tom Simmons (Salisbury, CT/Salisbury) capitalized on a man-up opportunity for the Dutchmen and Miller registered his first goal of the game to make it 9-4.
Brian Bendjy (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY/Salisbury) assisted on Simmons' goal. Union finished two-for-four on extra-man opportunities while Clarkson had two on five attempts.
That would be as close as Union got though with Clarkson scoring the next three goals to pull away. Kyle Alexander's first goal of the season at 5:07 of the third quarter made it 12-4. Myerow and Miller scored Union's two goals in the third to bookend a goal by Gibbons.
Miller scored back-to-back goals for Union in the fourth quarter, including the team's second man-up tally at 4:47 off a feed from Simmons.
Matthew Douglas capped things off at 9:54 with an unassisted strike for his fifth of the season.
Keinath finished with eight saves on 18 shots on goal for Union and had four ground balls. Oram suffered his eighth loss of the season. Clarkson goalie Greg Lamb made nine saves on 18 shots on goal in the win.
Union held a 17-12 advantage in face-offs and was successful in 16 of its 27 clear attempts. Clarkson had 17 clears on 24 chances.
The Dutchmen are on the road for their final two games. Up next they travel to Clinton, NY to take on Hamilton on Wednesday, April 26 at 7:00 p.m.
