TROY, NY -- Host Rensselaer eliminated Union from contention for a berth in next week's Liberty League post-season men's lacrosse tournament with a 12-5 victory over the Dutchmen Saturday. Union finished the 2006 season with a 4-10 record and 2-4 mark in the Liberty League, while the Red Hawks improved to 6-9 overall and will host Hamilton in the tourney's semi-finals, finishing 4-2 in the league.
Union had five different goal scorers in the contest, Dan Myerow (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury), Jonathan Miller (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth), Tom Simmons (Salisbury, CT/Salisbury), Matthew Douglas (New York, NY/The Hotchkiss School) and Kevin Rautenstrauch (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis Prep). For Myerow, the senior playing in his final game in a Union uniform, it was his team best 19th goal of the season. He also led the team with 30 points for the year.
Union goaltender Rob Oram (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) made 18 saves on the day.
Rensselaer was led by Chris Sherman, who scored four goals, and Ryan Bingham, who had three goals and an assist. P.J. McComb added three points, including two assists, and John Thibdeau made 13 saves in over 55 minutes in the Red Hawk nets, and Nick Gaetanos finished with two stops in nearly five minutes in net.
RPI had a 42-29 shot advantage and 27-20 ground ball advantage for the game. The Red Hawks won 16 of the 21 face-offs for the game.
RPI jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period and led 4-2 at halftime. Union got as close as 4-3 with 12:57 remaining in the third period on Miller's 17th goal of the year. But RPI scored the next six tallies for a 10-3 lead with 9:20 left in the fourth stanza.
