Middlebury, VT – Union (13-5) trailed by just four goals at the half but Middlebury pulled away in the second to hand the Dutchwomen a 19-6 loss in the NCAA Second Round Regional.
Stephanie Cronan (Marblehead, MA) led Union with three goals and one assist. She scored 29 seconds into the second to stay within striking distance but the Panthers put up eight unanswered to end Union's postseason run. Schuyler Winstead led the host team with four goals and six assists for ten points.
Middlebury took a commanding four goal lead to start the game, capped off by a goal from Elizabeth Renehan at 6:37 with an assist from Winstead. Union fought back and cut the deficit in half after Alexandra Toney (Bayville, NY) scored Union's second goal to make it 4-2 at 15:43.
The two teams traded goals before Middlebury scored a pair in the waning minutes of the first half to post a 7-3 halftime edge thanks to Reid Berrien and Alison Perencevich.
Middlebury came out and opened up second half play with a goal from Kim Walker at 5:16. Union came right back and answered just over five minutes later when Cronan put in her second of the afternoon. After that the Panthers offense went on the attack with eight straight goals to widen the gap.
Three of Winstead's tallies came during the run including the eighth goal at 25:36 on a free position shot to make it a 16-4 game.
Erin Lawson (Flourtown, PA) broke things up with her 25
th goal of the season at 25:48 and Cronan wrapped up Union's scoring at 29:04.
Rachel Beckman (Needham, MA) made eight saves for Union in her final collegiate game.
Stephanie Burlton (Coquitlam, BC) replaced Beckman late in the second half and finished with one save. On the other end goalie Blair Bowie made six saves in the win.
Middlebury held a 15-11 advantage on draw controls while Union had 24 ground balls compared to 22 by the Panthers. Middlebury converted on two of its four free position attempts and the Dutchwomen came up empty on their four attempts.
Middlebury advances to the NCAA Regional game on Sunday, May 14th against the winner of the Bowdoin/Colby game.
Union finished its season with seven wins in its final eight games with two of those victories coming against ranked opponents. The Dutchwomen postseason run matches its farthest trip into the NCAA Tournament in its four appearances.
