Field hockey team loses at Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY  -- Union lost a Liberty League field hockey contest at 14th ranked Skidmore, 5-1, Friday at Wachenheim Field. The Thoroughbreds built a 4-0 lead at the half and added an insurance goal in the second to improve to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in Liberty League play.

Erin Walters-Bugbee opened the scoring for the Thoroughbreds just five minutes into the game when she tipped one off the pads of Union goalie Liz Stanford (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional). Skidmore then scored three goals in a less than six minutes for the 4-0 halftime lead. Greta Cosey converted a penalty stroke at 15:34 to make it 2-0.  Jessica Bergen scored from Ali Starrett off a corner at 17:12 and Elise Britt scored at 21:31.

Union got on the board at 59:48 with a Jessica Trotter's  (St. Louis, MO/John Burroughs) goal. The Thoroughbreds answered with Bergen's second goal of the game from Chelsea Lisaius at 62:23.

Skidmore out shot Union 22-8, but the Dutchwomen held a 15-8 edge in penalty corners. Meredith Peeke had four saves for the Thoroughbreds, while Stanford stopped seven shots for Union.

Union gets right back into action Saturday, with the home opener vs. 2 p.m. against WPI. This game will be played at College Park.
