TROY, NY. - Junior Tripp Pietrak (Amherst, NY/Canisius High) tallied a goal and an assist for the second straight day to lead Union College to a 4-1 win over Colby-Sawyer in the first game of the second day of the Third Annual Red Hawk Classic hosted by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) at Harkness Field. The Dutchmen improve to 2-0, while the Chargers fall to 0-2.
Union jumped out to a 1-0 lead when freshman defender Brendan Steiner (Madison, CT/Fairfield) took a Jon Bellock (Manchester, CT/Loomis Chaffee) cross and headed the ball into the right corner at 10:28 of the first half.
The Dutchmen doubled their lead on a goal by junior Chris Poey (Amherst, MA/ Amherst Regional) at 16:46. Pietrak set up the goal, sending a crisp pass across the front of the goal to Poey, who put it past the left side of goalie Bill Kloss (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack).
Union went ahead by three goals when freshman Ryan Banagan (Bethlehem, NY/Bethlehem) scored into an open net on a miscue by the Chargers goalie at 32:03.
Pietrak gave the Dutchmen at 4-0 lead at 58:38 of the second half when he scored off a deflection in front. Colby-Sawyer goalkeeper Chris Feltes (Manchester, NH, Trinity) stopped a flurry of shots before Pietrak tallied the unassisted goal.
The Chargers broke through the Union defense with just ten seconds remaining in the game when sophomore forward Doug Currie (Harvard, MA/The Bromfield School) scored unassisted off a deflection in front into the far low post.
Sophomore Rob Kramer (Westport, CT/Staples) played the first 45:00 to earn the win while sophomore Harris Fendell (Short Hills, NJ/St. Benedict's Prep) played the second half. He made one save. Closs (2 saves) and Feltes combined for 10 saves in the loss for the Panthers.
The Dutchmen are back in action at College Park Field on Saturday, September 9, when they host SUNY Potsdam at noon in the first game of the Union Classic. SUNY New Paltz and Rensselear face off in the second game slated for a 2:30 p.m. start.
