Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Dutchwomen score early, defeat Vassar, 1-0

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY -- On Union College's first shot of their first offensive attack, at 31:13 into the game, freshman Alison Krywanczyk (Essex Junction, VT/Rice Memorial) scored to put the Dutchwomen ahead 1-0. That offense was all Union needed in registering a 1-0 Liberty League victory over host Vassar Saturday afternoon at Prentiss Field. Vassar falls to 4-5 (0-2 LL), while Union improves to 3-4 (1-1).

Krywanczyk's goal was off a tricky shot that Vassar junior goaltender Ellie Pomerantz (Hartsdale, NY/The Hackley School) seemed to have control of until it took an unexpected bounce off her pad and slid into the back of the net. Krywanczyk's goal ended up being the deciding goal in a game that featured few offensive opportunities.

The remainder of the first half consisted of solid play by Pomerantz, who finished the game with four saves, including two back-to-back point blank saves on Union junior forward Katie Bellucci (Patterson, NY/Pawling).

The second half continued a strong midfield presence by both teams, with a combined three shots taken during the final 35 minutes. On Union's best opportunity to add to its lead, senior Jessica Trotter (St. Louis, MO/John Burroughs) was on the doorstep of the Vassar goal when she released a deceptive between the legs shot that sophomore goaltender Taylor Herman (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) adeptly stopped with her quick reflexes. Herman finished the game with one save.

As time ran down in the second half, Vassar junior Catharine Twardy (Sherborn, MA/Dover-Sherborn Regional) helped push the ball into the Union defensive end, but nothing materialized for the Brewers.

The Dutchwomen are back in action on Wednesday, September 27, when they host New Paltz in a 4 p.m. game at Bailey Field.
